The floors and seating in a sanctuary are among the highest-visibility elements of the space and, because they are permanent fixtures rather than replaceable items, they deserve more deliberate maintenance than they typically receive.
Wood Pew Care
Solid wood pews are long-lived if maintained correctly and shortened considerably if they are not. The most common mistakes:
- Water damage from over-wet cleaning. Pew wood — particularly older oak and pine — absorbs water if surfaces are cleaned with a sopping wet cloth. Use a damp cloth, not a wet one. Wring thoroughly before wiping.
- Using the wrong products. Ammonia-based cleaners and anything with silicone will damage a polyurethane or lacquer finish over time. A damp cloth with a small amount of pH-neutral cleaner is the right approach for regular maintenance.
- Skipping the underside. Hymnbook pockets and the underside of pew seats accumulate dust and occasionally food debris. These should be wiped monthly, not just when visible.
Carpet in the Nave and Aisles
Church carpets last longest when they are vacuumed weekly in high-traffic areas (the center aisle, the front section, the entry) and monthly in low-traffic areas. The common mistake is vacuuming everything on the same weekly schedule regardless of traffic pattern — this under-vacuums the high-traffic areas and wastes time on areas that accumulate little soil.
Spot treatment matters more than frequency. A communion spill or a candle wax drip treated within 24 hours is recoverable. Treated after a week of foot traffic, it may not be.
Aisle Runners
Fabric aisle runners, particularly those used for weddings and special services, should be rolled rather than folded for storage. Fold creases become permanent quickly and look poor when the runner is unrolled. If the runner is stored folded, roll it in the opposite direction for a day before use to relax the creases.
Rubber-backed runners on hard floors should be lifted for mopping and allowed to dry fully before being repositioned. A damp rubber backing against a sealed concrete or wood floor will eventually cause discoloration in the floor finish.
